TELLING SOMETHING WE CAN'T KNOW: Experimental Approaches to Verbs Exhibiting Implicit Causality
نویسنده
چکیده
An tnterpersonal verb such as annoy or admire can be categortzed accordtng to whether tts grammatical subject or grammatical object initiates the interaction described by the verb Such a verb can also be categorized accordtng to whether a denved adjective describes tts grammatical subject (e g , annoying) or tts grammatical object (e g , admirable) Although there has been much speculation (e g , Brown & Fish, 1983) that these and other characteristics of these verbs shed light on basic principles of human social interaction, we argue that research to date has failed to demonstrate directly any real-time consequences of these verbs during language comprehension We present evidence that the tnittatmg-reacttng distinction predicts on-line changes tn the accessibility of these verbs' arguments, but that the existence of a denved adjective does not We conclude that tasks that question subjects explicitly about language may fail to reflect the ordinary processes of language comprehension

From Verbs to Discourse: A Novel Account of Implicit Causality
We present a semantic theory of causal discourse which allows us to derive expectations about upcoming discourse, specifically when to expect various types of explanations. We apply our theory to the phenomenon of implicit causality and show how the semantics of implicit causality verbs interacts with discourse structure. In particular, we show why certain verbs trigger explanations per default...
متن کاملTeaching Modal Verbs: Task-based vs. traditional approaches
Abstract Task-based language teaching is considered an effective way to achieve a harmony between grammar and communication. The present study investigates two different ways of teaching modal verbs: task-based versus traditional approaches. To this purpose, an Oxford Placement Test was administered to select 40 homogeneous participants out of a larger population who took this test. The selecte...
متن کاملVerb argument structure predicts implicit causality: The advantages of finer-grained semantics
While the referent of a nonreflexive pronoun clearly depends on context, the nature of these contextual restrictions is controversial. The present study seeks to characterise one representation that guides pronoun resolution. Our focus is an effect known as ‘‘implicit causality’’. In causal dependant clauses, the preferred referent of a pronoun varies systematically with the verb in the main cl...

متن کاملStrict and Sloppy ReWexives in VP Ellipsis
This paper reports a series of three experimental studies (described in detail in Ong 2013) with three related goals/results. The Vrst goal is to empirically evaluate two competing – syntax vs. discourse driven – accounts of strict vs. sloppy readings of reWexives in VP ellipsis, building on the experimental investigation in Kim and Runner (2009). The results strongly suggest that discourse-bas...
